Gabriel Rene Ramirez has been identified as the victim who was shot and killed following an incident that played out overnight and came to a grisly conclusion early on Aug. 1 following a lengthy standoff.

Shortly after 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday night, officers were initially called to a home in the 3400 block of Caledonia Circle in Woodbridge, where there was a reported suicidal person, who was ultimately found "agitated" with a gun in the backyard of a friend's home nearby on Bromley Court.

"An out-of-state family member called to report concerns over suicidal statements made by a loved one, later identified as (Ramirez)," a spokesperson for the Prince William County Police Department said.

"The caller relayed that their loved one wanted to end their life and expressed concerns that the individual was possibly armed."

Investigators said that over the course of several hours, members of the Crisis Negotiation Unit, in addition to an on-site Community Services clinician, attempted numerous times to secure the individual’s safe surrender.

Teams also attempted to relay messages from loved ones that were unsuccessful in resolving the situation, which came to a deadly conclusion at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, when Ramirez pointed a gun at the direction of officers and other occupied townhomes in the area, at which point he was shot by a member of the SWAT team, officials said.

Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The officer involved has been with the department for 4.5 years and is temporarily suspended, officials say, and was assigned to the uniform patrol operations and as a part-time member of the SWAT Team.

It remains under investigation.
